Special Needs Pet
Mindy
MIndy came to us from the county shelter, turned in by her owners in deplorable condition. She was horribly matted, dirty, and had stickers, thorns and twigs buried in her fur. It was only after a complete shavedown at the groomer that we realized she had much larger problems. She drug her back leg--it appeared to be broken. She had a tennis ball sized hernia hanging from her stomach. She was covered in scabs and scars--the result of years of flea and tick bites. The worst part was her jaw. It appears as if she had some type of blunt force trauma to her chin, causing several of her teeth to pop out and become loose. This injury went untreated for months, causing infection to set in down to the bone.
As a small group with limited funds we have to be careful of the medical cases we take on. We took her to our vet, not knowing if he would be able to help her, and even if he could--would we be able to afford it? He took her to the back and examined her thoroughly. When he came back he gave us the news--the leg could be splinted, but she would probably walk with a limp and would always be stiff during cold weather. The hernia could be removed, and that jaw? Infection had settled into the bone, and completely rotted her lower jaw. One half of her bottom jaw would need to be removed. He said, "This dog has been neglected for a very, very long time. But....I think I can fix her." That was all we needed to hear!! Money? We'd figure that part out later.... She was scheduled for surgery the next day.
MIndy did lose half of her jaw, but she came through the surgery with flying colors. The very next day, despite all she had been through--she wanted to play with the vet techs! She spent the next month in a foster home recovering, where she was a complete delight--such a darling little girl--how her owners could neglect her like that is just beyond comprehension.
.Mindy has now been adopted and lives with her other adopted sibling, a scaredy pants poodle mix.
