So you’ve lost your pet, now what?
WHERE TO LOOK
This is where most people make the biggest mistake. They often look for their lost pet at the nearest animal shelter. If your animal is picked up by animal control it will be taken to one of two COUNTY shelters. If you read nothing else on our website, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
There are two COUNTY shelters where stray animals are taken. One in Phoenix, and one in Mesa. Please note: these are COUNTY shelters, so if you live in Scottsdale, your animal will be taken to the Mesa shelter. The dividing line is CENTRAL AVE in Phoenix. *If your animal is picked up WEST of Central Ave, it will be taken to the West Valley Shelter.

*If your animal is picked up EAST of Central Ave, it will be taken to the East Valley Shelter.

There is also an ADOPTION CENTER. This facility does not take strays, however, animals who have finished their 3 day stray hold at one of the above facilities may be brought to the adoption center.

The ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY does not take in stray animals. The exception to this rule is if the animal is under 6 months, injured, or elderly. Stray animals dropped off by the public are then taken to one of the county facilities, usually the west valley shelter.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many people who find an animal will drop it off at a shelter nearest to their work. Often, they will take the animal to the Humane Society. A person who finds an animal in Gilbert may take it to the Humane Society, which will then send the dog to the west valley facility. For this reason, it is VITAL that you check BOTH shelters.
